Overholt double gold winner for Warriors

LONDON – St. Michael Warriors’ Brooke Overholt won her second gold medal of the WOSSAA track and field championships here at the University of Western Ontario last Friday.

Overholt won the Midget girls’ 300-metre hurdles in a time of 49.84 seconds.

The previous day, she topped the field in the Midget girls’ 400-metre race.

Overholt continues to show great improvement this season, her coach Mark Dewan says.

Also last Friday, Warriors’ Mark Manzano won gold in the Midget boys triple jump with a leap of 11.52 metres.

Claiming a silver in windy conditions Friday was Craig Klomp. He finished second in the Senior boys’ 800-metre race in a time of 2:00.49.

The race featured a one-two-three finish for the Huron-Perth Conference. Cameron Hoggarth, of Goderich DCI, was first in 1:59.30, and St. Marys Salukis’ Travis Mann was third in 2:01.79.

Winning bronze for St. Mikes Friday were: Claire Lavereau in Midget girls 200 metres, Erin Kuepfer in Junior girls 300 metre hurdles, Megan Dale in the Senior girls 3,000-metre run, and the Open girls 4X400 metre relay team (Brooke Overholt, Lauren Denstedt, Kristin Looby, Erin Kuepfer).

Other OFSAA West Regional qualifiers for the Warriors are: Jenna Bouwman in the Midget girls 300-metre hurdles, Faith Flanagan in the Junior girls 800 metres, and Kristin Looby in the Senior girls 800 metres.

The top six athletes in each event qualify for the OFSAA Regionals, which will be held this Friday and Saturday at UWO.

Gold for Overholt, Kuepfer

On Day 1 of competition last Thursday, Warriors’ Brooke Overholt and Erin Kuepfer both won gold medals at WOSSAA.

Overholt ran an almost four-second personal best to claim the Midget girls’ 400-metre race. Her time was 1:04.01.

Kuepfer ran an 0.4 second personal best to top the field in the Junior girls 80-metre hurdles. Her time was 12.27 seconds.

St. Mikes’ Megan Dale won silver in the Senior girls’ 1,500-metre race. Her time was 5:04.89.

Picking up bronze medals were: Kevin Rops in the Junior boys 100-metre hurdles, Erin Kuepfer in the Junior girls triple jump, and the Junior girls 4X100-metre relay team (Mariah Looby, Avery Wedow, Lauren Denstedt, Erin Kuepfer).

Other Regional qualfiers on day 1 for St. Michael were:

Claire Lavereau in the Midget girls 100 metres, Avery Wedow in the Junior girls triple jump, Kristin Looby in the Senior girls 400 metres, and Craig Klomp in the Senior boys 1,500 metres.
