ELMIRA – Tyler Canal is a new assistant coach with Elmira Sugar Kings of the Midwestern Jr. ‘B’ Conference.

Canal finished the 2014-15 season as interim head coach of the Stratford Culltions after Phil Westman resigned Feb. 6.

Following the season, Canal was one of three men interviewed for the head coaching position. Cullitons decided to go in another direction and hired Stratford native and former Cullitons player Dave Williams, 40, has their new bench boss.

Cullitons have also hired former Elmira GM Paul Jennings as their new director of hockey operations.

Canal is also a former Cullitons player. Following his Jr. ‘B’ years in Stratford, he attended Lakeforest College in Chicago on a scholarship.

“It was a good fit for me (joining the Sugar Kings),” Canal said when reached by the Gazette Tuesday. “I felt it was the right move and I was comfortable with it.

“I’ve known (Elmira head coach) Jeff Flanagan for a few years now, and I have some background with (assistant coach) Trent Brown. We both went to Lakeforest College. We played for the same coach.”

Canal spent four years on the Cullitons’ coaching staff—one as video coach and the last three on the bench.

He officially joined the Sugar Kings May 15.
