Marcel Scheele second at WOSSAA in Blyth

BLYTH – Marcel Scheele posted the best result among St. Marys DCVI runners at the WOSSAA cross-country running championships here last Thursday.

The Huron-Perth champion on the same track just one week earlier, Scheele finished second in the Junior boys race in a time of 20 minutes, 50 seconds. He finished 24 seconds behind race winner Levi Shimer-Whitehead, of London Central.

Other local finishers were Drew Horner, of Exeter South Huron, in 13th place, Garrett Yost, of Stratford St. Mikes, in 17th, and Mike Visser, of St. Mikes, in 26th.

Ninety-three Junior boys completed the race.

Senior boys fourth as a team

The next best finish by a Saluki came in the Senior boys race. Travis Mann was ninth overall in a field of 128 runners. Mann’s time was 23:05, one second faster than teammate Taylor Cornwall.

Remco Scheele, of DCVI, was 34th, Campbell Leavitt 57th, Dermott Shephard 61st and Brendan Bishop 67th – helping St. Marys finished fourth overall as a team.

Individually, Craig Klomp, of St. Mikes, finished third overall in a time of 21:56 – 30 seconds behind the race winner from Catholic Central in Lonodon. Klomp was H-P champion one week earlier.

Topp 15th in Senior girls race

In the Senior girls race, Salukis’ Natalie Topp was 15th overall in a field of just under 100 runners. Topp’s time was 21:34. Finishing 27th was teammate Madeline Aarts and Rachel Semenuk was 73rd.

Megan Dale, of St. Mikes, was the top local runner, finishing sixth. Dale was the H-P winner one week earlier. Cassandra Hinz, of Mitchell, was eighth at WOSSAA.

In the Junior girls race, Elizabeth Aarts and Sophia Slater were the top two Salukis, finishing 19th and 23rd, respectively, in a field of 115 runners. Teammates Laura Vink was 39th, Sami Spence 52nd and Ali Nagle 60th.

Top local runner was Erin Kuepfer, of St. Mikes, who finished second overall. She was the Huron-Perth champ one week earlier.

At WOSSAA, Kuepfer finished 23 seconds behind race winner Laura Parkinson, of Catholic Central.

In team rankings, the St. Mikes Juniors were fifth and DCVI was sixth.

In Midget girls, Grace Hutton, of the Salukis, was 29th in a field of 95 runners.

Top local Midget was Brooke Overholt, of St. Mikes. The H-P champ one week earlier finished 16th at WOSSAA.

In the Midget boys race, Jason Haughton, of DCVI, finished 56th in a field of 85 runners.

Top local runner was Sam Wyatt, of Stratford Central, who finished fifth overall.

OFSAA: The OFSAA meet is this Saturday, Nov. 1 at the University of Waterloo. Marcel Scheele, 15, will be the lone DCVI representative.
