The Orr Insurance GU-14 Strikers accomplished their goal and won the league (SWRSL) championship for the second year in a row.
Strikers’ record was an impressive 14 wins, two losses and two ties for a league-leading 44 points.
Orangeville Storm also had 44 points, but Strikers won the title with a better head-to-head record against Orangeville.
The Strikers’ team had many accomplishments during the course of the 2014 season. They allowed the least number of goals during the 18-game schedule.
The defence of Olivia Giovinazzo, Sarah Nemeth, Jenna Akroyd-Snider and Sophia Ayenew played some great defence in limiting the opposition forwards.
Goalkeeper Allyson Denstedt was outstanding and led the league with 10 shutouts. Strikers also topped the league in scoring with 59 goals. Ashley Vito won the scoring title with 26 goals, and fellow forward Tatum James came in second with 21 goals.
The Strikers team had a mid-field that dominated the centre of the pitch and also contributed at both ends of the field. The mid-field of Julia Cressman, Meredith MacMillan, Kaylee Orr, Sierra Sauve, Makaila Willmore, Ashley Hines, Sarah Strome, Tessa Eliasziw, Abby Mitchell, Micaela Vancea and Hannah Kooy were instrumental in creating and also shutting down scoring opportunities.
Other firsts were Ashley Hines scoring her first goal as a Striker and goalie Denstedt scoring a goal from a 38-yard free kick. Julia Cressman also scored one of her four goals from a header.
The U-14 Striker team will be taking a couple of weeks off for to celebrate their championship, but will be back on the pitch for tryouts for the 2015 season in the later part of September.
Dan Vito’s Strikers team encourages any player born in the year 2000 who would like to play competitive soccer on a successful team to contact SYS for tryout information.
