Sam Knechtel wins gold at Provincial track and field championships

Stratford Gazette

WINDSOR - Sam Knechtel, a Grade 11 student at Stratford Northwestern, placed first at the Ontario Provincial track and field championships here at the University of Windsor Phys. Ed. Complex recently.

The meet was sponsored by Athletics Ontario.

Knechtel placed first in the Youth Pole Vault division (born in 1997 or '98) with a vault of 3.55 metres, also a personal best.

With this vault of 3.55m, Knechtel is ranked 13th in Canada for his age group. This is his first year competing in the Youth division and will be competing again next year in this same division.

In placing first, Knechtel defeated the reigning gold and silver medalists from the OFSAA Pole Vault event that took place in June.

Knechtel, in the off season from Northwestern track, trains with the London Western track and field team.

The final summer track meet of the season for the Huskies’ athlete is this Saturday at TD Waterhouse Stadium at the University of Western Ontario. Knechtel competes in pole vaulting at 12:30 p.m.
