The Steelworkers Juniors ran their early-season SPFL record to 2-0 after a convincing come-from-behind victory over the Innerkip Juniors last Thursday at Teddy's Field.
Braden Bertens got his first pitching start of the year and did not disappoint. This first-year Junior worked well with veteran catcher Fraser Urquhart, mixing speeds and pitches in a most effective way.
Bertens pitched four complete innings and allowed only two earned runs.
Some early-season jitters by multiple infielders gave the Innerkip team a 4-1 lead after four inning.
In the top of the fifth, Sean Degroote came on in relief of Bertens and not only shut the door , but proceeded to knock in four runs with his bat to put the Steelworkers ahead for good.
Other runs batted in came from Urquhart, Trevor Pearn and Bret Kraemer. Kraemer had a three-hit performance and several outstanding plays at third.
The entire outfield of Jake Rock, Dan Bader and Eric Lindsay were exceptional. Innerkip is a very fast team, but were slowed down considerably after Urquhart gunned down their lead-off man trying to steal second and Rock and Lindsay both tossed out runners at home tying to score.
After a shaky start, a strong finish. Final score: St. Marys 8 - Innerkip 5.
Next home game is Thursday, May 29 at Teddy’s Field when New Dundee comes to town.
