Great mix of youth and experience

St. Marys Journal Argus

It was a sure sign of spring on a recent Sunday as the Junior men’s fastball players returned to Teddy’s Field for their first full workout.

South Perth Junior men’s fastball is embarking on its third season, and the division is stronger than ever.

This summer, the St. Marys Juniors will be one of eight teams hitting the field. The other SPFL teams are: Stratford, Innerkip, New Dundee, Milverton, Embro, Tavistock Juniors and Tavistock Midgets.

Old rivalries will compete fiercely and new ones will be started. Also this year there will be a ‘cross-over’ schedule featuring games against the South Perth men’s teams.

The St. Marys Juniors, meanwhile, have lost four players to graduation from their 2013 championship team, but first-year overagers are allowed to fill in when needed.

The 2014 team will have a great mix of youth and experience. Brendan Near, Eric Lindsay, Evan Lindsay and Trent Dundas lead a strong home-town commitment.

The Rock brothers and Brady Wietzel will bring great speed to the outfield. Third-year players and Team Ontario invitees Bret Kraemer, Andrew Pearn and Fraser Urquhart will provide strong leadership and big bats.

The Juniors’ coaching staff will consist of Tim Ruston, John Urquhart, Brett Pfieffer, Dale Levy and Dennis Near.

Home nights for the Juniors are Thursdays at Teddy’s Field, starting at 8:30 p.m. The team’s home opener this Thursday, May 8 is against the powerful Sebringville Sting, featuring Team Canada players Dale Levy and Don Scott.
