Huskies rink wins Perth curling meet

Stratford Gazette

LISTOWEL - The Perth high school curling championships were held last Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 11 and 12, at the Listowel Curling Club.

Stratford Northwestern’s boys team of Janik Habegger, Ryan Schwartzentruber, Owen Metcalfe, Aaron McKay and Jonathan Spackman are Perth Curling champions.

After dropping their first game by a single point, Huskies battled back to the final, facing elimination in five consecutive games.

After wins over the Northwestern Junior team and Mitchell, Huskies found themselves in the ‘B’ side semi-final against Listowel. Huskies prevailed with a stunning four point comeback in the final end to win 8-7.

Because of the earlier loss, the Huskies needed to beat Stratford St. Michael twice to capture the championship.

The first game was a close 8-6 win for the Huskies, setting the stage for a dramatic final. The championship couldn’t be decided in the regular eight ends. It took Northwestern skip Janik Habegger’s perfect draw to the button in an extra end to claim the title, 9-8.

Both Northwestern and the St. Mikes rink, skipped by Alex Zehr, qualify for Huron-Perth on Wednesday, Feb. 19 in Vanastra. The Perth championship represents the third consecutive title for the Huskies.

Stratford Country Club curling teams have qualified for Huron-Perth in five consecutive years.
