After losing a hard-fought game to Strathroy Rockets on Saturday in Strathroy, the Finnbilt ‘BB’ Novices were full of determination to come out on top over Mooretown Storm Sunday afternoon at the Pyramid Rec. Centre.
And they did just that. The Rock battled back from an early 2-0 deficit to quiet the Storm 4-3. Centreman Jimmy Schiedel sparked the St. Marys attack with a hat trick, including the winning goal.
The Storm was able to secure a 1-0 lead in the final seconds of the first period. After the visitors went up 2-0, the Rock got their comeback started just 20 seconds later.
Captain Schiedel led the way, blasting two lasers past the Mooretown goalie after receiving gorgeous passes from linemates Jaden Shiell and brother Nate on the first, and from Shiell and defenceman Rourke McEwan on the second.
Soon after, Shiell himself found a corner deep in the opponents’ net, with R.J. Martin and Nate Schiedel picking up the assists. Defenceman Alex Slade, and forwards Ian and Owen Boyd and Brock Chessell battled tough in the neutral zone keeping the Storm’s scoring chances to a minimum.
The Storm only snuck one in during the second period, and the Rock was up 3-2 heading into the third of this intense game. Lucas McCurdy, Gavin Muir and Nathan Switzer dug hard in the offensive end, threatening to extend St. Marys’ lead, but it was Mooretown that scored first in the final period, knotting the count at 3-3.
Refusing to let the game slip away, Jimmy Schiedel, for the hat trick, deked around the Storm defenders and secured the game for the squad. Ethan Brine and Shiell—with his fourth point of the afternoon--each achieved assists on the game winner.
The go-ahead goal came on a powerplay just over two minutes after the visitors had tied it.
Congratulations to goalie Jacob Sorensen on the big win!
