Sr. Rams win second hoops tournament

Stratford Gazette

KITCHENER - Stratford Central’s Senior boys basketball team travelled here this past weekend to participate in the Rockway Mennonite tournament.

Rams were missing two keys starters as Ben Stern and Ryan Foster were out with injuries.

Central opened with a 68-29 victory over Owen Sound St. Marys in pool play. Ben McConkey led all scorers with 17 points. Robbie Scott added 10 and Sam Stern added eight points in the win.

In their second game, Rams defeated Hamilton Sacred Heart 51-31. Nathan Klassen scored 15 in the win, and both Lars Dijk and Marshall Adlington contributed eight.

Rams faced the host Kitchener Rockway in the championship semi-final and posted a 64-45 victory.

Robbie Scott led the team in scoring with 21, Nathan Klassen netted 16 points and Lars Dijk scored 11 against Rockway.

Rams came up against Eden in the final. Central led most of the game but found themselves down by one point with very little time remaining to play.

In a spectacular finish, Justin Horne stole the basketball with 10 seconds left on the clock and passed it to Sam Stern, who sprinted down the floor and scored the game-winning basket with four seconds remaining.

Ben McConkey and Robbie Scott led Central in scoring.

The tournament win is Central’s second tournament victory this season. Rams have four league games this week and are hoping to remain undefeated in Huron-Perth play.
