LISTOWEL - Stratford Northwestern boys hockey team travelled here last Thursday to play their third last game of the Huron-Perth regular season, and their first of 2014.
Huskies went into the game sitting in fourth place in the league standings.
Huskies showed some rust early on, giving up two goals to the Lightning within the first six minutes of the game. However, the momentum shifted early in the second period, as Northwestern went on a powerplay and managed to put some offensive pressure on Listowel.
Wes Wickenheiser finished off a breakaway with a smooth deke midway through the second period to cut the Lightning’s lead to one. Goalie Ryan Primeau made a number of big saves near the end of the period to keep Huskies in the game heading to the third.
Northwestern came out determined in the final frame, carrying the majority of play throughout the period.
Dalton Carde scored a powerplay goal five minutes into the period to tie things at 2-2, and Wickenheiser scored his second of the game, and the game winner on a powerplay with just two minutes remaining. Brandon Taylor picked up the assist on a nice give-and-go play.
Defencemen Zach Ernest and Derek VanDenTempel both logged big minutes and played solid in their own end.
The win moves the Huskies’ record to 4-2-2 for the season. Their next H-P action is this Friday, Jan. 17 when they travel to Clinton to take on Central Huron Phoenix.
