Finnbilt Novices tie Jr. Stars, down Rockets

St. Marys Journal Argus

On Monday, Dec. 2, the Finnbilt ‘BB’ Novices started out their Shamrock week at home, facing the North Middlesex Jr. Stars.

Stars got off to a quick start, scoring three goals in the first period to take a 3-0 lead going into the middle frame. Bill Scheuermann’s squad, refusing to give up, kept digging and firing shots at their opponents’ net.

Finally, centreman Jimmy Schiedel found the mesh scoring an unassisted goal to give the Rock some momentum. Shortly after, his brother, Nate Schiedel deked around a Stars’ defensemen, and knocked one in. Rourke McEwan and Jaden Shiell picked up assists.

The persistent defensive efforts of Alex Slade, Ethan Brine, R.J. Martin and McEwan, along with two stellar glove saves by goalie Kiefer MacNeil, kept the puck out of the St. Marys net for the duration of the second.

The third period commenced with a 3-2 North Middlesex lead, but Paul Lamond's forwards were still hungry for some goals. Nathan Switzer blasted one in, assisted by McEwan and Brock Chessell, which was immediately followed by another goal from captain Jimmy Schiedel, with brother Nate, and Shiell earning the assists.

The Rock was finally in the lead, 4-3! Stars were not happy about giving up their three-goal cushion, answered back with two goals with only five minutes remaining, to regain the lead, 5-4.

With determination painted on Lucas McCurdy's face, he wove through the crowd with only a minute and a half left to tie it up 5-5! Defence coach Tony McEwan commented that each player contributed to the comeback--a true team effort!

Road victory Friday

On Friday, Dec. 6, the Finnbilt Novices were on the road to face the Strathroy Jr. Rockets.

The Rock broke open the scoring in the first period when Ian Boyd danced around the Rockets’ defence and surprised the goalie. Linemates Lucas McCurdy and brother Owen Boyd picked up assists.

With a 1-0 lead heading into the second, the visitors continued to display their grit, when Shiell notched one, after receiving a beautiful pass from defenceman Alex Slade.

Goalie coach Tyler Rae was pleased with MacNeil’s technique in net as he stood solid between the posts for his team. With a solid 2-1 lead at the start of the third, the line of Gavin Muir, Brock Chessell and Nate Switzer kept their noses to the grind stone, tiring out the Strathroy defence at every opportunity.

Not long into the final period, Owen Boyd received a pass up the ice from McCurdy and beat the goalie. Then, to secure the win, Jimmy Schiedel slid one around the netminder’s pads in fine Rock fashion.

The Finnbilt squad took the game, 4-3!
