Legion Midgets take consolation title in Arthur

St. Marys Journal Argus

ARTHUR - Greg Smale’s Legion A-E Midgets are having a successful season.

With a regular season of seven wins and two ties, this one-day tournament was about timing and seeing how the boys would step up to a higher challenge.

With St. Marys minor hockey’s own A-E tournament this coming weekend, manager Larry McLellan found this Rep. tournament to enter. The boys had to work hard to be successful.

St. George 3 – St. Marys 2

The Legion Midgets to figure out a higher paced game quickly as they trailed 2-0 going into the second period. It was time to turn it up a notch.

Adam Hyatt scored on a pass from Mike Smith to pull the Rock closer. Trailing 2-1 in the third, Mason Mueller tied the score, with assists from Brady Mcallum and Brady St.Louis.

With great goaltending from Tyler Kittmer and the defence core doing their jobs, the game remained 2-2 at the end of regulation time.

But in this tournament, there had to be a winner, so there was a shootout. After three shooters apiece, St. George scored to claim a 3-2 win.

St. Marys 2 - Coldwater 1

After losing in a shootout, the Legion crew needed to come up big. But at the end of the first period, they were trailing 1-0 to Coldwater.

In the second period, they again turned up the heat. Chad Leslie scored from Mike Smith and Adam Hyatt to tie it. Then in the same period, Mason Mueller connected from Travis Mann to put the Rock in front.

From there, all the boys played a defensive game to preserve the one-goal win.

St. Marys 4 - Arthur 0

After two close games, the Legion Midgets missed advancing to the final by a close point count and had to settle for the consolation final.

A match with host team Arthur took place, and it proved to be the team’s best game of the weekend. They controlled it from the first drop of the puck.

Zach Smith scored in the first period, with assists going to Jordan Keeler and Brady McCallum. The Rock added two more goals in the second period to take control.

Hyatt scored from Mason Mueller and Tyler Jarrett, and Mueller scored from Brady McCallum.

To add one more, in the third, Mike Smith scored unassisted.

Don't forget this weekend, Nov. 1-3, St. Marys minor hockey hosts its A-E tournament. In pool play, Legion Midgets play Friday at 12:30 p.m. against Tillsonburg, Saturday at 11:30 a.m. against Huntsville, and Saturday at 9 p.m. against Caledonia.
