St. Marys Ford Pumas U-17 girls are having a great season, chalking up a 9-0-2 record with only one London and District Youth Soccer League regular-season game remaining.
Pumas players currently hold five of the top 10 positions on the list of goal scorers in the league playing against teams from Byron, Taxandria and Woodstock in the LDYSL U-17 division.
At Meadowridge field last Monday, July 22, three second-half goals powered Pumas to a 3-0 LDYSL win over the Taxandria Falcons. Kristen Schmidt notched the shutout.
Also playing strong games for St. Marys were Kirsten DeJong, April Clark, Morgan Shamblaw, Courtney Schaefer, Taylor Fawcett, Alyssa Keller and Breanna Thomson.
Passing key to attack
When the Pumas are passing well, they are playing well, coach Larry Shamblaw explains.
“It’s a passing game for us,” Shamblaw says. “That’s what we’ve worked on all year. When we pass well, we control 75 to 80 per cent of the game.”
The U-17 Pumas recently played in a tournament in St. Thomas, battling hard to take home the championship. They went undefeated in five games, allowing only one goal against while scoring 16 times in the U-17 and U-18 division.
St. Marys defeated Byron 4-1 in the final game. Well done girls.
