Sirkel Midgets beat Stratford rivals 2-1

Stratford Gazette

Sirkel Foods Midget Aces edged out Hishons Midgets 2-1 in a Kitchener Local League semi-final game Monday night at the Rotary Complex.

Ali Graver opened the scoring midway through the first period with a wrister from the top of the circle, assisted by Claire Roulston. Hishons’ Brianna Glosnek came back with an unassisted effort only one minute later to tie things up.

Several chances went unrewarded at each end, including a Jayne Kirby shot that hit a goal post. Both Sirkel’s Emily Strawbridge and Katie Hall for Hishons were outstanding in net and it took until the final minute of OT when Taylor Groenestege finally solved Hall for the game winner.

Groenestege found herself wide open in front of the net after a cross-ice pass from Lydia Mueller and put it over a sprawling Hall to advance Sirkel Foods to the championship game to be held Sunday at the Sportsworld Complex in Kitchener.

Atoms blank Ice 2-0

Strickland’s Toyota Atom ‘C’ Aces travelled to play Ingersoll Ice on Saturday, and came home with a 2-0 victory. Aces’ hard work paid off when the Ice goaltender couldn’t cover a difficult shot from Faith Binns and Mihret Eliasziw stormed the net to bury the rebound in the second period.

Aces didn’t slow down and their persistence paid off in the third when Eliasziw scored her second of the night, with an assist from Quinn Rison.

The Atoms played their second game in as many days on March 10 against BAD Blazers at the Allman Arena. Blazers made it on the scoreboard first midway through the first period, but it was Faith Binns who found some open ice just 47 seconds later on a clearing pass from Mihret Eliasziw to tie the score and help Aces expand their unbeaten streak to four games with a 1-1 tie against the Blazers.
