Three new records set at Pat Cook Memorial Run

Josh Zelek, of Bedford Public school, set one of three new records at the 22nd annual Patrick Cook Memorial elementary cross-country meet at SERC last Tuesday, Oct. 2.

It’s the second year in a row that Zelek has smashed an existing record at the popular meet.

This year, he completed the 11-year-old boys, 1,800-metre race in a time of six minutes, 34 seconds. Zelek broke the old mark by 12 seconds.

Martina Tait, of Precious Blood Catholic school in Exeter, set a new record in the 13-year-old girls. Her time over the 1,800-metre course was 6:51.

Ethan Aarts, of Holy Name of Mary in St. Marys, established a new mark in the nine-year-old boys race. His first-place time was 5:08 over 1,400 metres.

Almost 1,300 girls and boys from 26 schools, ranging in age from six to 13, took part in the Pat Cook event, hosted by St. Michael Catholic secondary school.

Funds raised from the run support graduation scholarships, tents for sports teams, and track and field equipment.
