Local swimmers shine at Aqua 7

NEW HAMBURG - Fifty-nine Middlesex swimmers – including ATTAC members from Stratford and St. Marys – competed at the Aqua 7 championship finals for the first time on May 5 here at the Wilmot Recreation Complex.

Six teams and 296 swimmers from Southwestern Ontario raced in hopes to capture the Aqua 7 team title.

Middlesex won the female team title and came second in the men’s division. Middlesex finished a close second overall, by only six points, behind W. Ross MacDonald Swimming from Brantford.

The former defending champions, Waterloo-Oxford Association, placed third overall, being dethroned by Middlesex and WRMS by almost 300 points.

Middlesex swimmers also won 66 medals (27 gold, 21 silver, 18 bronze), set 12 new club records, and 18 swimmers posted 100 per cent best times.

1. W. Ross MacDonald Swimming - 789.5; 2. Middlesex Swimming - 783.5; 3. Waterloo-Oxford Association - 506; 4. Norfolk Hammerheads A.C. - 320; 5. Ancaster Alligators - 291; 6. St. Thomas Jumbo Jets - 150.

Female team scores:

1. Middlesex Swimming - 515.5; 2. Waterloo-Oxford Swim Association - 262; 3. W. Ross MacDonald Swimming - 241.5; 4. Ancaster Alligators - 178; 5. Norfolk Hammerheads A.C. - 160; 6. St. Thomas Jumbo Jets - 103.

Male team scores:

1. W. Ross MacDonald Swimming - 548; 2. Middlesex Swimming - 268; 3. Waterloo-Oxford Association - 244; 4. Norfolk Hammerheads A.C. - 160; 5. Ancaster Alligators - 113; 6. St. Thomas Jumbo Jets - 47. First-time Regional qualifiers: Julia Bukala (12); Catherine Mageau (8).

Catherine Mageau (8) – Bronze 50m back, Bronze 50m breast, eighth 50m free. Girls 9-10: Ella Johnson (9) – Silver 50m free, Bronze 50m back, Bronze 50m breast. Girls 11-12: Megan Rohfritsch (12) – Gold 50m back, Bronze 100m I.M., fourth 100m free; Julia Bukala (12) – Gold 50m free, eighth 50m fly.

Girls 13-14:

Shaelyn Lindner (14) – Fourth 100m back, seventh 100m breast; Julia Campbell (13) - Fifth 50m breast; Sarah McMillan (13) – Seventh 100m back, eighth 100m free, eighth 100m breast; Jennifer Murray (13) – Seventh 50m back, eighth 50m breast; Emily Mills (13) – Seventh 50m breast.

Girls 15 & Over:

Emma Beer (15) – Bronze 200m I.M., fourth 100m breast, fourth 50m fly; Romy Scheele (18) – Bronze 50m breast, fifth 50m back, seventh 50m free; Lauren Manders (16) – Gold 50m breast, gold 100m breast, fifth 50m free.
