GUELPH - After a long two-week layoff, Stratford Atom Aces, sponsored by the Egg Farmers of Ontario, played in the Guelph Storm tournament over the Jan. 6-8 weekend.
Aces were excited to bring home the silver medals!
The girls started out a little rusty and played North Halton on the Friday afternoon. They hung on to a 1-1 tie, with the Stratford goal being scored by Mikayla Flanagan.
On Saturday, Aces battled hard, but ended up losing 2-0 to Kitchener, and then dropped a 1-0 decision to the host Guelph team.
Even though the Aces only accumulated one point with their tie, the pool play allowed them to advance to the semi-final game on Sunday morning where they came up up against Whitby.
Aces dominated this game and came away with a deserving 3-0 victory.
Tori Gavin scored the first, and then Madison Smith added two of her own in the final minute of the third period.
The win earned the Stratford girls a berth in the final game, where they came up against Kitchener Lady Rangers for the second time in the tourney.
Aces’ Christena Downey scored in the first period, but the girls could not match the Rangers’ three goals in the second and third.
Stratford goalie Skyler Stockie played outstanding throughout the entire tournament, and helped give Aces a fighting chance.
All the girls played extremely well, in the semi-final and final games, and should be proud of the silver medals they brought home.
