Stratford Cubs have picked up a player from Tavistock for the Canadian Junior Men’s fastball championships next month.

The nationals are being held in Irma, Alberta, Aug. 11-17.

Cubs’ skipper Murray Patterson told the Gazette Sunday that Stratford has added Travis Hyde from the Tavistock Juniors. Hyde plays first base and third base, and also catches.

“He’s a high-end hitter and he’ll fit in with our team,” Patterson said.

Patterson reports that Cubs may add a second pick-up this week, meaning Stratford will take a 17-player roster out to Western Canada.

In addition to Stratford, Napanee and Owen Sound will also represent Ontario at the nationals. Napanee finished first, Stratford second and Owen Sound third at the recent provincial Eliminations in Napanee. Tavistock placed fourth and didn’t qualify.

Owen Sound has added big catcher Fraser Urquhart from the St. Marys Steelworkers Juniors, who went 1-2 at the Eliminations.
