HAMILTON - Stratford Legion Peewee ‘C' Aces finished their season as strong as they started it - winning gold at the Hamilton Bulldogs tournament here this past Easter weekend.Stratford defeated all opponents, allowing only four goals the entire weekend. In the championship match, Aces edged Lambton Shores Predators 2-1.
Game MVP Tali Calder opened the scoring with an unassisted goal. Mackenzie Powell scored what proved to be the winning goal off a rebound from a shot taken by Brianna Glosnek.
In semi-final play on Saturday, Stratford faced off against Norfolk Hericanes, winning 2-0. Emma Farquhar played well between the pipes, earning the shutout.
Grace Fountain put Aces on the scoreboard midway through the first period after a nice passing play with linemates Avery Casey and Clodagh Weber. Nicole Mazzanti's shot from the point late in the second was redirected by Paige Schweitzer, giving Stratford the insurance marker. Claire King had a strong game on defence.
In round-robin play, the Peewee Aces made easy work of St. Catharines Chaos, rolling to a convincing 6-0 victory.
Glosnek earned the hat trick, with Schweitzer adding two and Weber one. Shannon Tinning contributed two assists as did Casey, with singles going to Kate Brooks, Amy Lingard and Glosnek.
Later the same day, Stratford played the Predators, winning 4-3. Stratford drew first blood midway in the first period after centreman Grace Fountain won the draw back to defenceman Alica Hartung who was able to find the back of the net.
In the second, Aces rallied three more times with two coming off the stick of Glosnek and one from Fountain. Fountain, Schweitzer, Calder and Mazzanti all earned assists in the contest.
In Game 3 of the round-robin, Stratford blanked the Hericanes 3-0. Amy Lingard, Casey and Glosnek all scored for Stratford, with assists going to Schweitzer, Weber and Hannah Bush.Farquhar earned her third shutout of the tournament.
