Housing needs

Stratford Gazette

The advocacy office at the Local Community Food Centre has identified housing as one of the largest stressors for those living in poverty.

We are often faced with community members who have lost their homes and are in desperate need.

Stratford’s solution to homelessness continues to be a 14 day stay in a local motel. For many reasons, this is just not good enough. Our advocates are constantly looking for homes for people in need.  We believe housing is a human right that should be available to all citizens.

Sadly, the price of market rent is much higher than the average person can afford.  The Ontario Disability Support Program has a maximum shelter allowance of $476. Those on Ontario Works get less.

We are writing this letter to make this situation clearer to the average person and to ask that those who have an extra room or an affordable rental unit would contact our office at the Local Community Food Centre at  519-508-3663 ext. 6.

Let’s work together to make sure everyone has a home.
