Ethics before income

Stratford Gazette

Re: Pet store changes focus to adoptions, news, March 6

I just wanted to let Chris Koslowski (and the rest of the world) know that from now on, yes (!), I will buy all my cat food (we have three darling adopted cats) from his Ruffin’s Pet Store.

I couldn’t believe what I was reading, a businessperson who puts ethics before income? I am one of those people he mentioned who feel it is morally wrong to “buy” and “sell” animals as if they were commodities.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m truly not being self-righteous. For instance, I also happen to believe in the philosophy that no animals should be kept indoors, and yet despite this all three of our cats are indoor cats because we fear for their safety in a world of motorized vehicles and sadistic strangers. As well, some of my closest most respected friends and family have purebred cats purchased from small family breeders.

Yes, I assume as Chris acknowledged, many of these breeders are good people, but with all the animals being euthanized every day due to a lack of available and suitable families I can’t help but feel we should all consider adopting and spaying.
