Over the past couple of months, the Journal Argus has published a number of articles about the Town’s Economic Development Committee and its consideration regarding activities that can and should take place, or be moved to, The Flats. One of the considerations they have been discussing is a move of the St. Marys Farmers’ Market from its current location (the Jones St. parking lot) to The Flats.
As St. Marys Farmers’ Market Board members have received a number of inquiries from market shoppers and supporters about such a possible move to The Flats, we want to let you know that we are aware of, and are monitoring, these discussions.
We also want to take this opportunity to assure our regular Saturday morning shoppers that, for the foreseeable future, the St. Marys Farmers’ Market will continue in its current location in the Jones St. parking lot (southeast corner of Jones and Water Streets) every Saturday morning from mid-May to the end of October from 8 a.m. to noon.
We are interested in hearing your thoughts regarding a move from the current location to The Flats ... and we invite you to share them with Lynette Geddes, our Market Manager. We also propose to conduct a more formal survey during the summer.
The St. Marys Farmers’ Market Board and vendors continue to appreciate the support provided by the citizens and Town Council of St. Marys. We believe the farmers’ market is a valuable asset to the Town as it provides fresh, local food, as well as a community gathering place. It also brings residents of neighbouring communities and tourists into our town on Saturday mornings, giving a boost to our local economy.
Although the farmers’ market opens in mid-May, the abundance of produce does not make an appearance at the market until later in the season. Now that summer is upon us, the fruit and berries are making their way to the market, along with a greater selection of vegetables. The next few months are the time to enjoy the delicious food grown and prepared by farmers and bakers in St. Marys and the surrounding area.
Thank you for joining us for our most recent pancake breakfast, part of the Heritage Days celebration this past weekend. Featured again were our delicious homemade buttermilk pancakes, McCully’s sausages, local raspberries and real maple syrup. Proceeds from this breakfast were shared with the St. Marys Youth Centre.
We hope you will join us again for our next pancake breakfasts on Aug. 10 and Sept. 7. We look forward to seeing you at the market this Saturday and in the coming weeks.
Thank you for your continued support in this, our 21st year!
