More than 800 physicians and medical students from across Ontario and beyond enjoyed a weekend of hockey and hospitality as Stratford and St. Marys hosted the 2013 Docs on Ice hockey tournament April 18-20.
On behalf of both the 2013 Docs on Ice planning committee and The Lung Association — this year’s benefitting charity — we would like to acknowledge the tremendous support of the community in bringing this event to the area.
Sincere thanks to Andrew Williams and the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance as presenting sponsor. Thanks to Mayor Dan Mathieson and the City of Stratford, the Town of St. Marys, major sponsors Scotiabank, ProResp and Walton Financial, and the many other businesses and individuals who so generously supported Docs on Ice.
It takes an incredible number of people to organize and run a hockey tournament at seven ice pads in three communities, as well as host a major banquet. Many thanks to the volunteers from both Scotiabank and the community at large for making it happen.
As the 2013 benefitting charity, The Lung Association will dedicate proceeds of $150,000 to the development of educational materials and information sessions for young athletes with asthma and their coaches. With as many as one in five school-aged children living with asthma, it is imperative that coaches have the knowledge and skill to handle this common but potentially deadly condition to ensure that all kids have the opportunity to be active, playing a game they love….safely.
The 54 participating teams enjoyed two days of hockey and entertainment, and also had the opportunity to see what a great community we live in and get a sense of all that Perth County has to offer in the way of medical services, recreation and culture. They left saying it was the best Docs on Ice tournament in recent memory.
Kudos to all involved.
