A lively space

Stratford Gazette

Re: Councillor wants action on loitering, news, April 18

I believe that Councillor Paul Nickel's and Mayor Dan Mathieson's concerns about teenagers loitering around City Hall are misguided. In fact, we should be putting out more benches and chairs and encouraging all sorts of people to loiter around downtown.

World renowned urban planner Jan Gehl suggests that one of the steps in creating lively public spaces is to provide places for people to sit down. If the city does eventually build a town square behind City Hall are the police going to be chasing people off the square so we can end up with a sterile dead zone there?

It's too bad some members of council feel that the young people of the city are “public relations nightmares,” but if they aren't doing anything wrong or harassing people then leave them alone.
