In the Feb. 12 Gazette Coun. George Brown was quoted as saying the city might have to build a parking garage.
If the redevelopment of Market Square goes ahead according to the plan to do something by 2017 then the pressure to replace the lost parking will almost certainly lead to a parking garage.
From a quality of life perspective a parking garage is an ugly, unhealthy thing. Just one or two idling vehicles, especially if they need a tuneup, can make the air in the whole area unfit to breath. I wonder how many people will decide not to drive downtown once they experience this nightmare of the lungs a few times.
The city has admitted it doesn’t have the money to build such a monstrosity anyway and right off the bat the revenue from 72 Market Square parking meters will be lost. Not a good way to start.
People park in Market Square for a reason but one reason they may not have thought of is their health.
