Re: Family travels to France to honour veterans, news, Nov. 13
For the past 12 years the Friends of the Stratford Normal School/Teachers’ College Heritage have held a remembrance ceremony to honour veterans, especially those members of the Normal School who gave their lives for our country.
Special guests were invited to share their stories and this year the family of the late Private Len Young, a well-known Stratford family, shared theirs.
As guests of the French Consulate, they attended the June 6 ceremony held at Juno Beach, marking the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the turning point which ended World War II on the beaches of Normandy where over 5,000 Canadians lost their lives to win our freedom.
Several family members shared slides and stories of their memories at the most beautiful and poignant remembrance service I have ever had the privilege of attending. It brought the sacrifice of our veterans much closer, especially in light of recent events.
Adding to the service was the junior choir of Anne Hathaway Public School and the two young violinists who accompanied them.
The Gazette, in their issue of November 13, published a wonderful article which I hope was read by all your readers.
Thank you to the Young family for their excellent presentation, to the choir of Anne Hathaway and their beautiful rendition of Peace, and thank you to the Gazette for their excellent coverage of another Stratford story.
