Locals help Revolution win bronze at hoop provincials

St. Marys Journal Argus

LONDON - St. Marys Minor Basketball was well represented on this year's edition of the Stratford Revolution U-15 Boys team that captured bronze medals at the provincial championships here recently.

The Revolution defeated CBA out of Toronto by a score of 57-32 in the bronze-medal game.

It was an impressive victory over a solid team. Ryan O’Connor kicked in a season-high 24 points, including a buzzer-beating three to end the half.

Gerry Koot and Shayne Simpson contributed solid rebounding efforts. Simpson was perfect from the charity stripe and contributed four points in the winning cause.

Guard Mitch Watt added a pair of three-pointers from downtown in the second half to seal the victory, while Alex Horenberg contributed his best effort of the season.

Assistant coach Tim O’Connor said that all five Stonetown veterans enjoyed impressive seasons -- showing steady improvement all season long.

TORONTO – St. Marys DCVI athletes Natalie Topp and Abbey Thorup both competed well at the 2015 track and field championships here this past weekend at the University of Toronto.

Topp, a 16-year-old Grade 11 student, was 10th in the 400-metre dash on Thursday in a time of 56.83 seconds.

On Saturday, Topp was 12th in the 200-metre dash in a time of 25.34 seconds.

The duo of Rich Parsons and Rick Conard, of St. Marys, fired a sizzling eight-under-par 64 to finish tops in the Legion zone golf tournament Saturday at St. Marys Golf and Country Club.

It was a two-man, best-ball format. A team counts the best score on every hole. Eighty-eight golfers competed.

The Parsons-Conard entry collected nine birdies and one bogey during their round. Parsons had seven of his team’s birdies.

The Legion’s district tourney will be held on Saturday, July 4 at St. Marys G&CC.

Three other local pairs also qualified for the district event. They are Bob Mills and Tom Jenkins, Kelvin Chambers and Pete Vossen, and John McCarthy and Steve Cubberley.
