Stratford Northwestern Senior boys rugby team ended their season recently with the Huron-Perth silver medals.
In the semi-finals, Huskies faced St. Anne’s Catholic S.S. Eagles and came out with a dominating 17-0 victory.
Jon Strahan finished off an impressive rolling maul in the first half with a 40-metre scamper to score the first points of the game. Ben Van Den Tempel also notched a try, Daniel Bald made the conversion and the Huskies were off to the final vs. F.E. Madill Mustangs.
Madill defeated South Huron Panthers 26-0 in the other semi.
Just as all previous meetings with the defending H-P and WOSSAA champs, it was a very physical, and hard-fought contest.
The first half saw back-and-forth action, with both teams knocking on the doorstep, but were unable to score.
Mustangs did break the Huskies’ defence with five minutes left in the half, scored a try and made the conversion for a 7-0 lead.
That would be all they needed as Northwestern was unable to crack the Madill defence and tie things up. Standout players for Huskies included Nic Poole, Evan James and Daniel Bald.
The Northwestern girls rugby team finished fourth in Huron-Perth. In their semi-final contest, Huskies they were matched up against perennial OFSAA qualifier St. Anne’s.
The short-staffed NW team played well, but ultimately lost 24-5, with Dana Pugh scoring the Huskies’ only try.
The bronze-medal game featured another hard-fought game against South Huron.
In a back-and-forth game, Huskies were down early but rallied, and brought the score to within two scores in the second half.
Unfortunately, that was as close as they would get, although Jesyka Young did score a try on the final play of the game for Northwestern. Jenna Debus, Holly Entwhistle and Rachel McDougall all had strong performances for Huskies.
The NW Junior boys rugby team participate in their Huron-Perth tournament on Friday, May 29 at Northwestern, with hopes of moving on to the Barbarian Cup.
