On Sunday at the PRC, the Style by Sam Atom ‘C’ girls competed hard against the East Lambton Eagles and came out with a 1–0 win which advances the team to the group final.
The shutout goes to the outstanding goaltending of Grace Hillman. Marissa Hawkins scored the game’s lone goal in the third period, unassisted.
Leading up to the weekend, it was like the girls representing the Stonetown had kicked it into overdrive and were prepared for the battle.
The Atom Rock started in Woodstock for the first game of the weekend, a playoff game against the Wildcats. The girls dug deep against a tough Wildcats team and managed to put the first marker up on the board.
The entire team worked tirelessly before Woodstock tied it up late in the third, where the score would remain until the final buzzer rang.
Saturday bought BCH to the Rock’s home ice for a provincial match-up. BCH had handled the girls in the Blue and White with confidence in the past. With The Styles by Sam girls playing the best hockey of the season, they had something to prove against the girls from the north.
St. Marys opened the scoring in the second period and it wasn’t until the middle of the third that that BCH tied it up. Once again it was not a win, but it was the second tie of the weekend against two very strong teams.
Both games were considered extremely successful by all with the effort and growth the girls had demonstrated.
Sunday was the third game of the weekend, with tired legs and a determination to make it to the group finals the home team put out their best effort.
“With the speed and skill the girls displayed, you would never know it was their third game,” coach Steve Smith reported. “They knew they had to win the game to punch their ticket to the final. They knew they would have one more chance to finish it but wanted to take the pressure off and win it on home ice in front of a very loud crowd packed into the Pyramid Centre.”
St. Marys took advantage of a favourable bounce off the backboards to put one in early in the third. East Lambton was never able to break the focus of Grace Hillman as she showed everyone that with the support of her team one goal was going to be the difference on this day.
The team has to dig deep this Wednesday (Mar. 4) against South Huron to try and advance to the Provincials in Toronto in April.
The upcoming weekend pits the Style by Sam girls against the Eagles again when they will be looking for revenge in the Brantford tournament, Mar. 6-8.
