LISTOWEL – Derek Elliott scored a pair of goals and Garrett James got the shootout winner as the Listowel Cyclones topped the visiting Cambridge Winter Hawks 3-2 on Friday night.
Listowel (15-21-1) overcame 1-0 and 2-1 deficits and a disallowed goal at the end of the second period to edge out Cambridge (18-16-5). The Cyclones snapped their modest two-game losing skid with the victory, while the Winter Hawks dropped their third game in four outings.
Elliott (22) increased his goal-scoring streak to six games, tallying seven times over that span. Corey Flemington, Tim Nauta, Jamie Huber and James each picked up single assists.
Trailing 1-0 to start the second, the Cyclones co-captain potted his first of the game at 3:48 on the power play, tapping in a pretty pass from James on a 2-on-1.
The Winter Hawks would regain their lead five minutes later with the man advantage, and would hold it until late in the third when Elliott would knot things up once again.
Tyler Fassl turned aside 25 of the 27 shots and all three shooters he faced in the shootout, improving his record to 9-8-0.
Alex Bottigoni led the Winter Hawks with a goal and an assist. Lucas Machalski made 37 saves in defeat.
Listowel hosts the Guelph Hurricanes at the Memorial this Friday, January 23 at 7:30 p.m. The team also travels to Cambridge for a rematch with the Winter Hawks on Saturday at the Galt Arena Gardens. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
