Cooper Bantams clip Hawks 4-0

Stratford Gazette

Stratford Cooper Standard Bantam ‘B’ Aces returned to game action again this past Sunday. It was the first game for the Aces since their first tournament of the year in Etobicoke on the Oct. 17-19 weekend.

At the Etobicoke Dolphins ‘Pink the Rink’ tournament, the Aces opened with a tough loss against North Bay Ice Boltz.

The Stratford girls couldn’t buy a break and lost 3-1, despite out-playing and out-shooting their opponents.

Unphased, the Bantam Aces came back to finish round-robin play with a 4-0 win over Leaside Wildcats and a 4-1 win over Mississauga Chiefs.

After a second-place finish in Pool ‘C’, the Aces went on to the elimination rounds and took out the Hamilton Hawks. The final score of that game was 5-2.

On Sunday morning, the Cooper Standard Aces lost a 1-0 heart-breaker to the Southpoint Stars.

Scoring chances were few and far between against this hard-skating defensive team, but the girls were in the game right up until the final buzzer.

Southpoint went on to beat North Bay, the only other team to beat Stratford in the tournament, 2-0 in the final.

Debus leads way with hat trick

Having gone two weeks without a game, the Bantam Aces looked a little rusty as they took to the ice against the Bluewater Hawks on Sunday afternoon at the Rotary Complex.

They gained momentum though and went on to record a 4-0 shutout win. Abby Debus led the team in scoring with a hat trick.

Debus had a goal in each of the three periods, including a shorthanded marker to open the scoring in the first period. Joanna Van De Walle scored the fourth Stratford goal.

Stacey Shackleton played a strong game and collected a pair of assists. Single assists went to Samantha McLeod, Katie Berg and Jessica Blowes.

Goaltenders Shayla Brooks and Sommer English were both called on to make some great saves in collecting the shutout.

Both teams were familiar with the penalty box, with 12 minor penalties being assessed in this game.
