SPECIAL TO THE BANNER
ST. MARYS – The Listowel District Secondary School ladies slo-pitch team travelled to St. Marys on May 16 to compete in the Huron-Perth Invitational Girls Slo-Pitch Tournament and compete they did – by winning the tournament.
Originally scheduled for May 15, but rained out, six Huron-Perth teams competed, making up two pools of three. Listowel played South Huron first and had a 9-4 lead into the bottom half of the last inning, but the Lightning made a few errors and South Huron came back to tie the game. The game was called on time and ended in a draw.
The girls really put their game together after that and handily beat Stratford Central, 13-1. This placed them first in their pool and advanced them to the final game against Mitchell.
Once again, the Lightning ladies played very tight defence and their bats were slugging. They beat Mitchell 14-3 to win the tournament, with several participants playing slo-pitch for the first time, as many were fastball players.
