STRATFORD – Although no one will be advancing to the provincial playoffs, the Listowel District Secondary School senior badminton team had an excellent showing at the Western Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association (WOSSAA) finals held in Stratford on April 16. LDSS sent four competitors to the tournament, with Julia Nichol (girls’ singles) obtaining the Lightning’s highest overall placement with a fourth place finish. Nichol beat the representative from Stratford Catholic Central, Medway High School and East Elgin Secondary School to advance deep in the tournament, before dropping a match to the same Medway opponent to settle for fourth. Mike McMurren (boys’ singles) was eliminated from tournament play with a loss in the third game of his third match to a Medway opponent by a narrow 21-19 margin. Bailey Pines and Jenna Bitton (mixed doubles) were also eliminated from WOSSAA by Stratford Central in straight sets, by scores of 21-19 and 24-22.
