GUELPH - The U-9 St Marys Norampac Snipers concluded their season here this past weekend at the Western Region Ringette Association Regional tournament.
Although the Snipers left with no hardware, they did leave with great pride in knowing they demonstrated the determination that has made their season so successful.
Head coach Peter Westelaken summed it up the best saying “it isn’t really about the scoring; it’s about player development and the growth and the love of the sport.”
There is no doubt that the Snipers not only grew as players, but more importantly grew as ambassadors of the sport. Whether enthusiastic in victory or congratulatory in defeat, the entire U-9 team deserves credit for always respecting each other and all opponents.
When looking ahead to next year, Westelaken explains that “from the coach’s perspective, my job is to make sure that I take a team and have them learn more, enjoy the sport more, and respect themselves as players more.
“So that next year, if I'm fortunate enough to get them, that would be great. If not then next year’s coach is going to say these girls must have had a great coach last year because they understand the sport, are passionate about the sport, and respect themselves as a player.”
The Snipers truly benefitted from the wonderful leadership, both on and off the ice.
The U-9s who represented St. Marys ringette this year were: Regan Frayne, Kaylee Fowler, Megan Richardson, Niamh Brennan, Sarah Lynch, Jillian Sterkenburg, Isabella Aarts, Olivia Nugent, Arielle Barber, Anaya Larmer and Jessica Burlingham.
Summing up his pride and admiration of the team, Westelaken exclaimed, “I love everyone on this team! I am glad I had the opportunity to coach. It was very rewarding to me and an awesome experience.”
The U-9 Snipers would like to thank: all the coaching staff, behind the scenes staff, volunteers, parents, fans, team sponsor Norampac; and the Journal Argus for allowing coverage of their games each week.
Thank you girls for such a wonderful season, and for doing St. Marys proud!
