Volunteers honoured at awards ceremony

Stratford Gazette

The regional Ontario Volunteer Service Awards were held at the Arden Park on Thursday, May 20, with 180 volunteers from Perth and Huron counties recognized for their years of contribution.

The guests of honour received a coloured pin which varied in hue depending on how many years they have given with an organization (between five and 60). There were also separate awards for youth volunteers.

Thursday's ceremony was one of 55 held across the province, recognizing a total of 11,000 volunteers. In total, the Huron-Perth volunteers represented 2,998 years of donated time. Three had personally given 60 years to a certain cause.

Altiera Essensa of Big Brothers Big Sisters Stratford was the keynote speaker, and touched on the importance of volunteers in the community, while Central school student and vocalist Oriana Roulston sang O Canada.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration and the Ontario Honours and Awards Secretariat.
