I was very disappointed to read comments from Town councillors regarding budget deliberations and the possibility that the high dive at the St. Marys Quarry could close permanently.
The Quarry has a special place in the hearts of not only St. Marys residents, but citizens all over the world. Stories of a past Prime Minister and famous Stratford Festival actors taking a dive off of the high dive are part of the fabric which makes this town special. In my travels, I have encountered many people, in several countries that recognize St Marys. The first thing they mention is the Quarry. The second thing, is always the high dive. The high dive is a St. Marys legend.
The comments surrounding usage and business cases hold no validity in my view. The information should be considered very carefully. It wasn’t long ago, that sources informed this council that there were no ramifications or penalties that would affect council’s crusade to close Cadzow Pool. Information comes in many forms. The numbers can be skewed and evaluated in many ways.
I feel that the residents of St. Marys have been very patient and respectful in receiving property tax increases more than double the rate of inflation, increases in user fees for facilities, garbage and water. We understand the stresses of provincial down-loading and maintaining infastructure. Isn’t there room to maintain the things that make us special?
