Stratford songwriter Dan Stacey’s anthem Hockey Night is Here has been selected as a top 50 finalist in the CBC’s Song Quest competition.
Stacey now faces an intense week of online voting, with 40 songs up for elimination by Thursday, Dec. 19.
Stacey’s Facebook page advises fans that they can vote for him more than once per day; logging onto the CBC’s Song Quest website via different browsers will allow supporters to vote multiple times daily.
Stacey faces some stiff competition in the quest for a new hockey anthem. Competing songs range in genre from Gordon Lightfoot-esque folk to metal, but all maintain a strong hockey-related theme.
At press time, Stacey’s song has been listened to a respectable 2,265 times. However, he’s got ground to cover if he’s going to catch Calgary’s The Dudes, whose song, Saturday Night, was leading with 87,690 listens as of press time.
The winning song will be announced during CBC’s coverage of the NHL’s Outdoor Winter Classic on January 1. The chosen anthem will be re-recorded in a studio with noted producer and songwriter Joel Plaskett and will air on Hockey Night in Canada as part of an opening video montage.
