Firefighters donating their upper lips to men's health

Members of the Stratford Fire Department will once again be joining a growing number of area men who will sprout moustaches during the month of November.

The practice, popularized by prostate cancer charity the Movember Foundation, began in 1999 in Australia. Today thousands of men all over the world grow moustaches; some of them raising money for the Movember Foundation, others for awareness of the importance of regular prostate examinations and other men's health issues, while still others grow them just for fun.

The Movember Foundation raises money for prostate and testicular cancer awareness and research, as well as mental health initiatives, all under the banner of "men's health."

In Stratford, the firefighters will be teaming up with a number of local businesses in their fundraising pursuits. The chocolatiers at Rhéo Thompson Candies are making chocolate moustaches, in both milk chocolate and dark, that sell for $2 a piece. A dollar from each sale will benefit the Movember charity. The firefighters have agreed to sell the treats at their fire halls, as has the Tavistock fire department, whose members are growing their own moustaches for Movember.

"The most important thing is awareness," says firefighter and Movember team captain Brett Fairweather, who adds moustaches make a man into a kind of "walking billboard" for men's health issues.

Two area pub/restaurants are participating in the event as well. Boston Pizza hosted the firefighters' kick-off party on Nov. 1, donating 15 per cent of the bar tab towards the charity. The Boar's Head will host the firefighters' end of the month silent auction on Nov. 30, which last year raised $6,400 for the cause. Both Boston Pizza and the Boar's Head will also be selling BeerMos as well. They are plastic moustaches attached to a ring which can be affixed to the mouth of beer bottles, trumpets, pacifiers, or any number of other items.

Lastly, The Bakery Café at Pazzo will be selling four-packs of moustache cookies for $3 each, with a dollar from each sale going toward's the firefighters' Movember team.

If you'd like to join or donate to the Stratford or Tavistock firefighters' Movember teams, find them at http://ca.movember.com under The Stratfrord Professional Fire Firghters (actual spelling) or Tavistock Fire Department, respectively.
