Bilyea, Urquhart power Junior Indians to provincial baseball title

St. Marys Journal Argus

PORT LAMBTON - St. Marys minor ball products Kevin Bilyea and Fraser Urquhart played a big part in helping Stratford Indians capture the Junior ‘A’ provincials here on the Aug. 16-18 weekend.

After a very up-and-down sophomore season for these two players and the team, it was a great way to end it.

After two early wins over Ancaster and Harrow, the Tribe ran into a tough 11-9 loss in the bottom of the seventh inning against Creemore Saturday, but bounced back with wins over Harrow, Orillia and then a rematch with Creemore in the final late Sunday which was never close, with Stratford taking full revenge and a large margin of victory.

In the final game, Bilyea went 4-for-5 and reached base all five times.

Notes:

--Bilyea, who caught and played second base, could not be stopped and led the team with an average over .500 for the tourney. Urquhart, playing first base, batted .300 and collected eight runs batted in.

--Urquhart and Bilyea, who have played together since they were six, fittingly played the final against Creemore side by side locking down the right side of the infield. It is the pair’s first provincial baseball title.

--The team’s Junior Intercounty regular-season record was 10-16, and the team was eliminated from league playoffs by Kitchener Panthers in the first round.
