KINCARDINE – The Listowel Legionnaires have now moved into second place in the Thames Valley Senior Baseball League standings, following a win and loss on the road over the weekend.
Listowel (8-5) handled the London Giants (5-9) 12-2 on Aug. 1 for its third win in a row, before falling to the Kincardine Cubs (12-4) on Sunday, 9-2. The Legionnaires have been unable to solve the Cubs this season, losing all three of their games versus the top-seeded team.
Last Thursday, Steve Palmer (1-0) picked up his first win of the season with an impressive performance against the Giants. Palmer pitched seven strong innings while recording eight strikeouts, one earned run and no walks to lead the Legionnaires.
Dave Brooks led Listowel offensively, going 3-5 with his first home run of the campaign. David Smith added his second round-tripper while going 2-5, and both Cody Newbigging and Brian Lane went 2-5 with a triple each.
Listowel will next meet the Cubs this Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at John Bell Diamond. The Legionnaires will also play next Friday, Aug. 16 against the Byron Bulldogs (7-7) at John Bell Diamond in their last scheduled home game of the regular season. First pitch is at 7:30 p.m.
