The stars come out for Tommy opening

One mother had a "Who's on First?" moment worthy of Abbott and Costello as she tried to explain the difference between bands The Who and The Guess Who to her teenage daughter while they waited to catch a glimpse of celebrities along the red carpet at the Avon Theatre. The rock opera Tommy was opening tonight.

"And he's the guitarist for The Who?"

"Guess Who"

"I dunno!"

The exchange was one of many as the bustling crowd of ticket-holders and random passersby waited for a chance to see veteran rockers Pete Townshend, guitarist for The Who, and Randy Bachman, guitarist for The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Both musicians were on hand to see the Stratford Festival's production of Tommy, of which Townshend is the primary composer.

The two men spoke with fans, posed for pictures, and gave autographs. One fan even had the original case of his Tommy album on vinyl signed.

Bachman was all jokes and smiles.

"Still takin' care of business, Randy?" asked one fan, referencing the famous BTO song.

"You know it ... EVERYDAY!" came Bachman's refrain.

Townshend, meanwhile, made it to the red carpet with five minutes until curtain. Accompanied by director Des McAnuff, the rockstar still paused for as long as he could, signing autographs and answering questions, before hurrying inside.
