The Banner held its annual limerick writing contest again this year, and received 58 limericks composed by 26 contributors from across the region. Entries came from Listowel, Atwood, Gowanstown, Brussels, Palmerston, Belgrave, Kenilworth, Drayton, Clifford, Harriston, Mount Forest, Wingham and Milverton, with the winning limerick written by Kelly Battams of Atwood.
Battams isn’t new to the limerick podium, having placed in the top three previously. Here is her winning ditty:
If I were a wee Irish lass,
I’d drink beer from a wee Irish glass,
Like Paddy, I’d go
In green, head to toe
To blend in with the wee Irish grass.
Second place goes to Audrey Morden of Harriston, who wrote:
Hippity, boppity, boo,
A little boy lost his shoe,
He searched the field over,
Found a four-leaf clover.
And ran home shouting, “Yahoo!”
And the third prize went to the familiar home of Jim Shannon of Clifford, whose wife Susan won first prize last year. Jim’s limerick was:
Ringy ding, ringy ding dink
Leave your dishes right there in the sink.
To Listowel go,
And forget about snow!
Wear green, with your cheeks rosy pink!
Each prizewinner was presented with a gift card – $50 to Shoppers Drug Mart, $25 to Tim Hortons or M&M Meats. Winners were chosen by vote in the Banner office.
All submitted limericks will be included in the Paddyfest book, which will be distributed with the Feb. 28 issue of the Independent Plus.
