Family mourns after Wellburn area drowning

An ice-covered creek just south of Highway 7 along Heritage Road in Thames Centre was the scene of tragedy on Friday, Feb. 15, as a 49 year-old woman, well-known in the St. Marys and Wellburn communities, was found dead.

Peggy Heard, an employee of the St. Marys office of Coldwell-Banker real estate, resided with her family on Heritage Road. Middlesex County OPP reported that, at approximately 4:30 p.m. last Friday, she was found in the creek at the rear of the property.

“Middlesex London Emergency Medical Services and Thames Centre Fire Department responded,” stated an OPP news release. “Police were advised of a lone female who appeared to have drowned.”

“CPR was performed at the scene by members of the emergency services but, despite their efforts, the female could not be revived.”

Marty Thomson, a sales representative at Coldwell-Banker, said the office is shocked by their colleague’s death. He noted that it’s impossible to know for sure what exactly happened, since she was alone at the time.

Middlesex OPP stated a post mortem examination will be conducted to determine cause of death, but that foul play has been eliminated from the investigation.
