Police lay first degree murder charge in shooting

Stratford Gazette

A 23-year-old man from Milverton has been charged with first degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the shootings in the village Tuesday night.

Michael Schweitzer appeared in Stratford Provincial Court Wednesday and had his case remanded until Dec. 7.

Perth County Ontario Provincial Police have identified the victim as 17-year-old Nicole Wagler of Milverton, who succumbed to her injuries at the scene. A second victim, 22-year-old Tyler Baker, also from Milverton, remains in hospital in London in critical condition.

Wagler was a student at Stratford Northwestern secondary school, where she was a member of the wrestling team. Wagler listed both Baker and Schweitzer as friends on Facebook. The men’s Facebook pages identify them as members of the class of 2007 at Northwestern.

Emergency services responded to a 911 call about 10 p.m. Tuesday at 11 Edward St. in Perth East, where they found Wagler and Baker. Schweitzer was arrested near the residence.

Police ask anyone with information to call the provincial police criminal investigation branch at 1-888-310-1122, or their nearest police service, or leave an anonymous tip by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Members of the investigative team remain on scene and the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
