North Perth paid tribute to a tireless volunteer affectionately known to the community as “Grandma Lou,” honouring Louise Newbigging with the Norm Stirling Citizen of the Year award.
Over 150 people gathered at the Elma Memorial Community Centre on Nov. 19 to thank the many volunteers in the community who make North Perth a better place to live, said Mayor Julie Behrns.
“North Perth is very blessed to have a number of volunteers that work for us on a daily basis, making sure that it is the best place to live, work and play,” she said. “It’s a great sense of community that North Perth has so many people that have that extra bit of time to give back to their community.”
Later that evening, a nomination letter written Marion Roberts on behalf of many was read by Coun. Paul Horn, detailing the ways that 81-year-old Newbigging has touched members of the community.
