Stephanie Gratton named Citizen of the Year

When the recipient of the 2010 Norm Stirling Citizen of the Year award was named at Friday's ceremony, eyes scanned the room waiting for her to come forward to accept the honour. She never did. That's because winner Stephanie Gratton wasn't able to attend a banquet held largely in her honour. Speaking to The Banner on Monday, Gratton said she was initially invited to the event by North Perth administrative assistant Kate Docker to speak on her work with the Community of Character movement. "I had responded and said I was unavailable, but I would definitely make sure someone could come," she said. That was when Docker had to come clean and tell Gratton she had been chosen as this year's Citizen of the Year. Gratton said she was faced with a tough decision of attending or following through with plans she had already made for the weekend. On the plus side, she said it would allow her to gather her thoughts beforehand. "At least I won't be spontaneously shocked at the actual evening," Gratton said. Mayor Ed Hollinger said the chance to keep the news secret and surprise the award recipient every year is part of the excitement every year for the Citizen of the Year. "It was unfortunate she was away and couldn't attend, but I'm sure Stephanie will realize what she's missed," he said. "Unfortunately we won't see the tears and the shock and surprise."....
