Ice cream shop opening on Ontario St.

Stratford Gazette

A franchise of a popular American ice cream shop is coming to Stratford.

Marble Slab Creamery is set to open in the Gino's Pizza plaza on Ontario Street, across from Shopper's Drug Mart, on March 1.

Marble Slab's Canadian marketing co-ordinator Lee-Anne Wright said the Stratford store will be the fourth to open in Ontario and the 24th across Canada. Currently, there are two stores in London and one in Woodbridge. The local franchise owner is Donna Hodgson.

Since the chain was founded in 1983 in Houston, Tex., it has grown to 500 locations in the United States. The first Canadian store was opened in 2003 in Calgary. Wright said Marble Slab makes all its ice cream on-site and uses no additives or preservatives.

"We are considered a super-premium ice cream, which means we have a higher milk-fat percentage than normal ice cream," she said.

The store offers the usual selection of floats, sundaes, banana splits and frozen yogurts. All cones are also handmade at each store.
