Jackie Mayne

Mrs. Jacquelyn Ramona (Hicks) Mayne of Listowel passed away suddenly at Listowel Memorial Hospital, on Monday, Dec. 29, 2014 at the age of 59.

Wife of Thomas Mayne. Daughter of Wilma Hicks of RR 1 Listowel. Mother of Melanie and Roger Thackeray of Walton, Jeff and Rebecka Mayne of Keswick, and Justin Mayne of Listowel. Grandmother of Abigale and Avery Thackeray, and Byron Mayne.

Sister of Pat Rathwell of Stratford, Julie and Steve Coulter of Brussels, Ken Hicks of St. Marys, Rick and Kathy Hicks of Acton, and Sherri Hicks and Tom Wilson of Listowel, and sister-in-law of Dale Newman of RR 3 Brussels.

Predeceased by her father Earl Hicks and sister Carmie Newman.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Jan. 1 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel where a private family funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 2. with Father Keith Morrison officiating.

Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

Dorothy Scott

Mrs. Dorothy Ellen (Hill) Scott of Listowel passed away at Stratford General Hospital on Friday, Dec. 26, 2014 at the age of 74.

Beloved wife of Bill Scott for 57 years. Mother and friend of Everett and Irene Scott, Anna and Doug Duncan, and Cindy and Barry McTavish, all of Listowel, and Bill and Deb Scott of Guelph. Grandmother of Rob Scott, and Lindsay Scott and friend Kevin McMillen, all of Listowel, Lisa and Warwick Ryan of Cambridge, Bill Scott and fiancée Kayla Lee of Calgary, Joe and Tanya Duncan, and Cory Duncan, all of Listowel, and Tracey McTavish and fiancée Andrew VanLoo of Owen Sound. Great-grandmother of Jacob, Abriana and Addison Ryan, Trey Duncan, Cleo Duncan, Jade Lee, and Karsyn VanLoo.

Sister of Sam Hill of Harriston, and sister-in-law of Ethel Hill of Waterloo, Lloyd Heibein of Listowel, Lawrence Scott of Goderich, Earl and Anita Scott of London, Barb Currie of Listowel, and Joe Currie of Listowel.

Predeceased by her daughter Tracey Scott, sister Violet Heibein, and brother Ed (Bonnie Hill.

A celebration of Dorothy’s life was held at Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel, on Monday, Dec. 29 from 1-3 p.m. Private family funeral services followed, with interment in Fairview Cemetery, Listowel.

Velma Bowen

Mrs. Velma Marie (Graham) Bowen of Listowel passed away at Listowel Memorial Hospital on Monday, Dec. 22, 2014 at the age of 91.

Beloved wife of the late Walter Bowen, who predeceased her in 1997. Dear mother of David and Gail Bowen of London, and John and Stasia Bowen of Toronto. Grandmother of Nathan and Heather Bowen of Killen, Alabama, Cory and Matthew Caton of Brandon, Mississippi, Jennifer Bowen of Ottawa, and Michael Bowen of Toronto. Great-grandmother of Bailey, Mac, Taylor and Boyd.

Sister of Jean Garlick of Belleville, and sister-in-law of Darlene Graham of Uxbridge.

Predeceased by her brother Bill Graham, and by her brother-in-law Doug Garlick.

The family would like to thank the friends and neighbours for all of their care and support for Velma over the years.

Visitation was held at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel on Saturday, Dec. 27 from 12 noon until the time of the funeral service at 1 p.m., with Rev. George Russell officiating. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Listowel.

Memorial donations to the Listowel Memorial Hospital Foundation or to a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.

Gerald McArter

Gerald McArter of Brussels passed away peacefully at Wingham & District Hospital on Friday, Dec. 26, 2014. Born in Morris Township on Oct. 21, 1933, Gerald was 81.

Gerald was the beloved husband of 41 years to Ruth (Jewell). Dear father of Doug Huether of Brussels and Greg and Dinny Huether of Listowel. Dear brother of Donna Fischer, Mel and Lois McArter, and Dorthea and Oscar Ducharme.

Loving grandfather to Bill and Angel Huether, Annette Burgers, and Greg and Mandi Huether. Also loved by his many nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.

Gerald was predeceased by his parents John and Elsie (Beirness) McArter, his brothers Jim McArter and Murray McArter, and brother-in-law Roy Fischer.

Gerald was a very hard worker and loved agriculture and farming, a true steward of the land. Equally adept at construction, welding and mechanics.

Friends were received by the family for one hour prior to the funeral service being conducted on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home, Brussels, with Pastor Sandra Cable officiating. Interment took place in Brussels Cemetery.

As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated by the family.

Marina Hays

Mrs. Josepha Ruth Marina (Schiebel) Hays of Hesson passed away at Listowel Memorial Hospital on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014 at the age of 79.

Beloved wife of the late Ken Hays (2004). Loving mother of Christine Hays and her partner Dave Norris of Wingham, and of Duane Hays and his wife Jennifer of Hesson. Grandmother of Andrea Wade and her partner Adam Bourassa, Jessica Cooper and her fiancé Derek Davidson, and Mathew and Brett Cooper; and loving great-grandmother of Samuel Bourassa and Hailey Davidson.

Sister of Ursula Hahn of Elmira, and sister-in-law of Pat Schiebel, Mary Schiebel, Doris Hays, Leroy Keller, Earl Young, Marg and Charlie Fraser, Bruce and Velma Hays, and Dell and Jim Dinniwell. Marina will be sorely missed by her many nieces and nephews and by numerous cousins.

Predeceased by her parents John and Mary (Basler) Schiebel; sisters Alma and her husband Jim Bishop, and Mona and her husband Jack Jackson; brothers Gregory and his wife Madeline Schiebel, Mello Schiebel, and Cosmas Schiebel; brother-in-law Alfred Hahn; and by Ken’s family, Robert and Beatrice (Watson) Hays, Stan Hays, Dorothy Keller and Doreen Young.

She was a long-time member of the St. Mary’s parish in Hesson, and since its closing was a member at Macton and Linwood’s parishes, as well as attending in Elmira and Listowel.

Marina started her career in Elmira working in the Royal Bank before taking a position at McKee Manufacturing in Elmira where she proudly worked for over 25 years. Following the closing of that chapter in her career, she and Ken built their own business from their home, Ken Hays Machine and Welding. When Ken and Marina were forced into retirement by Ken’s illness, Marina became a full-time caregiver for Ken the next five years.

“Having wheels and would travel” made sure she picked up anyone else along the way who wanted to attend Mass, church suppers, eucharama in Millbank, or bingo in Atwood, and would take friends and family to medical appointments. Marina will be remembered for her faithfulness to her Catholic church, generosity, kindness, good humour and wit.

Visitation was held at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel, on Tuesday, Dec. 30 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., with parish prayers at 1:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Listowel on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. Following the reception, interment in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Hesson.
