Candidates for six Councillor positions, as well as the top job as Mayor of the Town of St. Marys, will gather on Thursday, Oct. 2 for an all-candidates debate being organized by the St. Marys Journal Argus.
There will also be an informal “meet-and-greet” prior to the commencement of the debate, for candidates for the role as trustee for Perth South, West Perth and the Town of St. Marys, for both the Avon Maitland and Huron-Perth Catholic district school boards.
The event will be held at the Pyramid Centre on James Street South. The school board trustee candidate meet-and-greet will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the one-third hall of the Community Centre. The all-candidates debate will begin at 7 p.m. sharp in the adjoining two-thirds hall.
Admission is free. Complimentary coffee, tea and water will be available.
To begin the event, each candidate will be given three minutes to introduce themselves, with the order of speakers chosen by names being drawn from a hat. The candidates for Town Councillor will speak first. The candidates for Mayor will introduce themselves last.
The Journal Argus has been soliciting advance questions from the public, and will also make available a box in which they can drop questions as they enter the event. For the second segment of the meeting, a selection of these questions will be read and the candidates will be asked to respond, if they wish.
Time permitting, the final segment of the meeting will be open to the floor, with questions from the public in attendance.
If a question is directed to a particular candidate, that candidate will be asked to respond first, followed by other candidates. In the case of a question not directed to any particular candidate, the candidates for Mayor will be asked to respond first, followed by the candidates for Town Councillor.
The public can submit advance questions by dropping them in person at 11 Wellington Street North (there is a secure outdoor mailbox if you’re dropping off outside of business hours), by email at firstname.lastname@example.org, on the Journal Argus Facebook page, or by phone at 519-284-1155, ext. 105. Your question may be a duplicate or similar in nature to another question that has already been submitted, so there is no guarantee that your exact question will be posed at the debate.
Questions will also be taken at the Journal Argus office (11 Wellington Street North) on Thursday, Sept. 25, during our annual participation in the Alzheimer Society of Perth County’s “Coffee Break” fundraising and awareness campaign. Drop by the Journal Argus for coffee and treats, make a donation to the Alzheimer Society to support research and supports for those suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia, and submit a question for next week’s all-candidates’ debate.
